Botox is the #1 selling product of all beauty medical treatments. There have been approximately 10.9 million vials of Botox sold in the United States since 2002. Botox is one of the only FDA-approved treatments that can be injected into specific muscles to temporarily reduce muscle activity. It targets the repeated muscle contractions from frowning and squinting over time, which essentially erases fine lines and slows down the progress of wrinkles. It takes approximately 24-48 hours after the treatment to see visible smoothing of fine lines and wrinkles. The results of Botox can last up to 4 months if done properly. The active ingredient in it is a small amount of a highly purified botulinum toxin protein refined from the bacterium, Clostridium botulinum. The ingredient is special because there is no other bacterium that is identical, hence there is no generic form of Botox available. Unlike a facelift or any other kind of invasive facial rejuvenation procedure, Botox only takes a couple of minutes and requires zero downtime.
The most common use of Botox is to block signals from the nerves to the muscles. Botox is popular for getting rid of forehead lines, frown lines, crow’s feet, bunny lines, chin lines, skin bands on the neck, and lines around the mouth by being injected into the problem area. Since it removes unwanted lines and wrinkles, it leaves the individual with younger-looking skin, but it also treats other problems besides beauty-related problems such as:
Helping with Cervical Dystonia: A movement disorder in which your neck muscles involuntarily contract, causing your head to twist or turn to one side or tilt forward or backward.
Crossed Eyes (Strabismus): An eye disorder where both eyes do not look at the same place at the same time. It occurs in individuals who have poor eye muscle control or are very farsighted.
Blepharospasms: An eye spasm which is when your eyelid moves every few seconds, and you can not make it stop. The cause of it is typically stress, lack of sleep, or use of alcohol, tobacco, or caffeine.
Migraines: A headache disorder characterized by recurrent headaches that are severe. Migraines are usually caused by abnormal brain activity.
Bladder Spasms: The bladder muscle squeezes suddenly and releases urine without warning. It is most likely a warning that your body is fighting a disease within your nervous system or a urinary tract infection.
Hyperhidrosis: Excessive sweating is when you sweat more than you expect based on your surroundings, activity level, or stress.
