If you are considering botox injections to smooth facial wrinkles and regain a more youthful appearance, you have come to the right place! Keep reading to find out everything you need to know before your botox treatment.
Botox is a cosmetic drug that comes from botulin, a toxin. The word toxin may sound scary, but when used in small amounts, and with years of research behind it, there’s nothing scary about it. The uses of Botox range from treating muscular conditions to cosmetically removing wrinkles.
But how does it work? Botox blocks signals from the nerves to the muscles. It temporarily “freezes” the facial muscles, preventing wrinkles from appearing since your facial muscles can no longer contract.
In 1978, an ophthalmologist named Alan B Scott began Food and Drug Administration (FDA) trials for the use of botulinum toxin to treat crossed eyes. The drug received its first FDA approval to treat crossed eyes and eye twitching (blepharospasm) in 1989.
Its primary purpose back then was ophthalmic, but it was through additional trials and research that they realized the drug’s potential. In 2018, more than seven million people received Botox injections.
Botox has been approved for numerous uses. Some of the more well-known uses for Botox include:
Temporarily treating lines and wrinkles in the forehead, between the eyebrows, and crow’s feet.
Injections to the underarm to help prevent excessive sweating
Prevention of migraine attacks
Prevention of uncontrolled eye twitching
Temporarily treating an overactive bladder
Correction of a gummy smile or a ‘lip flip’
Lifting the brows
And so much more.
Treating with Botox is quick and easy. The entire treatment takes only a few minutes when performed by an experienced Nurse Injector. Botox is injected into the area of concern with a very small needle.
Results can be seen within a few days with full results seen in just two weeks. When cared for properly, your results can last for 3-4 months. While the effects eventually wear off, wrinkles and fine lines continue to relax over the course of months.
You may have heard of Dysport, considered the European counterpart of Botox. Dysport has been available in the United States since 2009 when the FDA approved it for the same uses as Botox.
Dysport is an effective and non-invasive treatment for fine lines and wrinkles – Which may leave you wondering: Which one do I choose?
The biggest difference is that Dysport is more diluted than Botox. It works best for larger areas, while Botox is better for smaller areas and finer lines. You may start to notice results with Dysport within 2-3 days while Botox takes 5-6 days to start noticing changes.
Although Botox is not a permanent solution, it is one of the least invasive ways to rejuvenate your face and bring youth back to areas of concern.
